Super Bowl Cookies

Super Bowl Cookies

Football fans - It's that time of year again, and I have Super Bowl cookies
that are sure to be a touchdown for any Super Bowl Party!
These are a simple combination of sugar cookies with a taste of mint in the shape of a football.

What you need: (amounts vary depending of how many cookies you want to make)
- Your favorite sugar cookie recipe and ingredients needed
- Colored icing
- Andes Mints
- White icing

Here is how to make them:
1. First make your favorite sugar cookies. I prefer making smaller ones, so the little footballs don't get lost.

2. While your cookies are baking,  unwrap your Andes Mints and trim off their corners, making little footballs.
Andes Mints - 5lbs

3. Once your cookies are cooled and ready for frosting, apply a small smear of icing in your favorite team's color. (I have also iced the cookies with green like the football field to be neutral for any team.)

4. Place an Andes Mint on each cookie and press into the frosting.  You need to do this while the frosting is still soft so that they stick.

5. Then pipe a small amount of white frosting making the marks of the football. (Use a decorating pin to make the small detail of the white frosting easier. http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/nordic-ware-detailed-decorating-pen/?pkey=cbakeware-cupcake-shop& )

Enjoy and Go 49ers!

Travel Tips

If I am not on a trip, I am usually trying to plan one!
Here are some helpful travel tips to make the most of your vacation,
 big or small.

Get a book -  The first thing I do when planning a new trip is buy a guide book.  This is a great way to start learning about the particular city/country you want to visit. I prefer books over pure internet searching because you may not have great internet access where you are visiting, but you will always have your book to reference.  My favorite travel books are Frommers and Eyewitness Top 10.

Develop an itinerary - Lay out the days you will be traveling in some form of a document.  This is helpful so you can keep track of what you want to do each day.  Go through your travel guide and pick out the places that you want to visit.  Find the ones that are close in proximity that you might be able to do in one day and write it on the itinerary.  This itinerary can be structured in a manner that is followed strictly or loosely to remind you "Oh, that church that we wanted to see is near the park where we are going. Let's see them both today."  This also helps so you don't spend your time traveling to and from places all over the city in one day.  Planning ahead saves time and makes your time more efficient. I always keep my itineraries for my friends as well - people ask for them a lot!!!

Search for unique experiences - Uncover what is unique to that city or country and try to experience it. For example:  In Japan, go sake tasting.  In Brazil, take a Samba class.  In London, have high tea. Take the time to experience another culture.  If you are staying within the United States, you can still do this.  For example:  In Baltimore, try the crabcakes. In New York, go see a Broadway show. You will get much more out of your vacation by trying  new things.

Use your miles - The best way to collect miles is to always book with the same airline.  Even if a ticket is a little more expensive every once in awhile, the additional cost may still be worth it if you are accumulating miles.  Never use your miles for non-vacation flights.  Save them for vacation! A ticket to Mexico will likely be more expensive than a ticket to your grandmother's birthday party so save the miles for the more expensive ticket. Book mileage tickets early - they do have black out days, and the earlier you book, usually the less miles needed to purchase the ticket. Also, don't be afraid to fly coach on international flights using your miles. A free ticket to Paris flying coach is better than not going to Paris - you'll survive.

Take a cooking class - I began doing this a few years ago.  Not only is it a fun experience, but you truly learn about different cultures.  Then, you can return home with this knowledge.  I have taken cooking classes in Africa and China, and whenever I make something from one of those classes at home now, it takes me back to my vacation.  These classes are easy to find on the internet - it's more common than you think and what a great memory!

Get organized - Keep a folder with your printed itinerary and other pages that you may need while away.  Sometimes internet is hard to find, so don't depend on it.  I always print copies of our hotel reservations and tour reservations as well.  Also make copies of your passports and put them in the folder.  If your passport gets stolen, it will be a lot easier at the American Embassy if you have a photocopy of your passport as you try to prove your US citizenship.

Find a place to sleep not stay - Don't get me wrong, I enjoy staying at nice hotels, but keep it in perspective to where you are visiting.  If you are going to Hawaii, then yes staying at fancy beach resort probably makes a huge difference.  In London, on the other hand, I doubt you will be in your hotel room that much, so don't waste your  money on the Four Seasons. Also, if you are staying in a city for extended amount of time, it is sometimes fun to stay at two hotels to see more of the city. For example, in Hong Kong, my husband and I stayed on the Kowloon side for two nights and on Hong Kong Island for another two nights.  It was a totally different experience at each location.  If you really love to travel, get a "hotel" credit card.  For example, I have a Hilton AmEx. It is my go to card that I use all the time. When we travel, we usually stay at Hiltons for free!

Keep your money -  Do not use traveler's checks!  Use ATMs or use your credit cards as you will get a better exchange rate.  My husband and I have a special credit card for travel (Capital One doesn't charge foreign exchange fees) and a special ATM card / saving account for traveling.  Only transfer the amount of money you will need for your trip into your travel savings account.  This way if your card is lost and/or your account is hacked into, only that amount is lost. This happened to us in Brazil!  Keep your other ATM and credit cards back at hotel in the safe just in case you need them. When you return home, transfer the money back and empty out the account.  Fraud happens even after you have returned home.

Start searching - Check out all the best travel sites.
www.viator.com has amazing tours. This is a safe site that works with smaller agencies in international cities.
www.frommers.com  I love their planned itineraries.  These can help guide you to your own plan.
www.tripadvisor.com has great reviews from other people.

Travel Safe!

Wine and Chocolate Tasting Party

My two favorite things: Wine and Chocolate!
Together they make a perfect match, so why not throw a party for chocolate and wine tasting?
Start planning this for Valentine's Day!

Pairings:
White Chocolate with Riesling

Milk Chocolate with Merlot

Raspberry Chocolate with Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark Chocolate with Zinfandel

How to pull it off:
- Set up tasting stations around your table with a small plate of chocolate  next to a specific bottle of wine.  (I bought small 3oz Solo cups for wine tasting)

- My friends wanted to bring wine, so as they replied to the invitation, I assigned them to bring 2-3 (depending of the number of guests) identical bottles of a specific kind of wine to keep everyone's tasting experience the same.

- I also placed strawberries, grapes, and pretzels on the table for snacking in between tastings.

- Make sure to provide a pitcher of water for your friends to drink between tastings to clear their palates.

- After everyone enjoyed tasting the wine and chocolates, we roasted marshmallows in the fireplace and made s'mores with a champagne toast.  (If you don't have a fireplace, you can use unscented candles.)

Enjoy!

10 New Year's Resolutions Everyone Should Have

It's that time of the year again - We all want to improve our lives, and on this day, we promise to start fresh.  Here are 10 New Year's Resolutions that everyone should have!

10.  Travel - Get out there and see the world. Whether you plan a large international trip or a local weekend getaway, everyone needs a break so plan a trip for this year.  Viator is an amazing travel site where you can find tours from all over the world to right in your backyard. www.viator.com

9.  Drink more water -  We are all told to drink 8 glasses of water per day, but how many people actually do this? Carry a bottle of water with you to work or keep a glass by your desk.  Then, refill it throughout the day.  Afternoon headaches and sluggishness are most likely caused from dehydration, so drink up.

8.  Volunteer -  Give back this year by spending some time helping others.  This can be very rewarding and also helps out your community.  I have previously mentioned my favorites - check them out:
St. Jude's: http://www.stjude.org
Minds Matter:

Ronald McDonald House:

7.  Treat yourself -  Take time for yourself.  Go get a massage or a manicure.  Acknowledge your flaws, work to fix them, but don't be so hard on yourself. Do something nice for yourself every once in a while.

6.  Exercise more -  This can mean more than just going to the gym.  Take the stairs or walk to the market instead of driving.  Try to do something everyday that gets your heart going.  Exercise is not only good for your physical health but also for your mental health.

5.  Laugh - Don't sweat the small stuff.  Remember to take a moment and laugh even if it is at your own expense.  Laughing is good for the soul.

4.  Get your sleep -  Don't be shy about going to bed early.  This doesn't make you old, it makes you smart.  Sleep helps your immune system, lowers stress, and can also help you maintain a healthy weight.  Get your rest this year.

3. Eat better -  We could all eat a little better.  Add more fruit and vegetables to your daily diet. Eat smaller, more frequent meals to even out your blood sugars and keep boosting your metabolism. If you are craving something, have it but don't over indulge.  A healthy diet is a good mix of foods in smaller portions.

2.  Spend more time with family and friends -  Make an effort this year to speak to or visit your family more.  These days with iphones and facetime, you can really see your family whenever you want.  Take advantage of this and make time to chat with your loved ones. For spouses, create a date night or set aside some special time each week.  Life is busy, and sometimes you have to make time for those you love.

1. Count your blessings -  Take some quiet time everyday to think about the things you are thankful for.  Whether or not you are a religious person, counting your blessings puts life in perspective and keeps us grounded.

Happy New Year!
